How to sell an item in several sizes on your menu

A large pizza and a small pizza are the same menu item, with different prices. In qmen.us you set up the size once and then just say how much each size and flavor combination costs.

Quick answer

Set up each size once in Sizes, inside the Menu, and select on the item which ones it uses. Several sizes on the menu call for a price per size and flavor combination, filled in on the Flavors and prices grid. When the order is placed, whoever is taking it picks the size before adding the item.

What selling the same item in several sizes means

Sizes are portion variations of the same item — Small, Medium, Large, 300ml — and here that list belongs to the whole restaurant, not to the item. You set up Large once and any menu item can use it. Every restaurant starts with a default Regular size, which stays hidden when the item is sold in just one size.

The price doesn't live in the size: it lives where they meet. The item's grid has one column per size checked and one row per flavor — or a single Price row, when the item has no flavors. That way each combination has its own amount: Large Calabresa at R$ 62,00 and Small Calabresa at R$ 28,00. When the order is placed we calculate from the chosen combination and lock that amount in on the tab.

Why use sizes instead of repeated items

  • One item, not three. Instead of Small pizza, Medium pizza and Large pizza competing in the same category, you have one item with three sizes. Photo, description and Default kitchen live in one place, and the menu doesn't turn into a repetitive list.
  • The right price for each combination. The waiter doesn't need to keep a price table in their head: the amount comes from the grid and goes onto the tab already locked in, so changing the menu later doesn't change past orders.
  • Set it up once, it works for the whole restaurant. The size list is shared across the restaurant, so the same Large serves pizza, acai and sharing plates. You never set up the same size twice.
  • Fewer taps in a rush. The size appears as a row of big buttons with the default already selected. One tap changes the size and the price updates right in front of whoever is taking the order.
  • The guest sees each size's price. On the public page the item shows its price range and, below it, the list of sizes with each one's price and description.

How to set up several sizes on your menu in 7 steps

Seven steps: set up your restaurant's sizes, select which ones apply to each item, and fill in the price grid.

  1. Open the sizes screen

In the Menu, the right-hand column has the Sizes block. Tap manage — or + Size — to open the sizes screen, at /restaurante/cardapio/tamanhos/. At the top is the Add size form; below it, the list of what already exists, with Edit on each row.

  2. Set up your restaurant's sizes

Fill in the Name (Small, Medium, Large, 300ml) and, if it helps, the Description — it's optional and shows to the guest while they choose, like “serves 2”. Tap Save and the size goes onto the list right away, with no page reload. The order is the order you added them in, and Regular already comes marked as the default.

  3. Select the sizes inside the item

Open a menu item (or create a new one) and scroll down to the Sizes table. Check the box for each size that item is sold in; the unchecked ones don't even appear to whoever is ordering. Every item needs at least one size: if you uncheck them all, we go back to the default Regular.

  4. Fill in each size's price

Right below comes the Flavors and prices (R$) grid. The columns are exactly the sizes you checked, and the Price row is for an item without flavors: type there how much each size costs, like 42,00. At the bottom of the page, tap Save.

Tip: An empty cell doesn't become any price, and the size disappears from that item's options. If you checked a size, fill in its amount.
  5. Combine size with flavor

If the item has flavors, each flavor becomes a row on the grid and the price is filled in flavor by flavor, in each size — that's where a Large Calabresa can cost something different from a Large Margherita. With Several flavors in one item on, the Flavors column of the sizes table sets how many flavors fit in each size, and Price with several flavors decides between Highest price and Average of the flavors.

  6. Check how it looks on an order

Open the item in the waiter app or with the table QR code. When the item has more than one size, the Size question appears, with one button per option and the default already selected, and the price changes with each tap. The chosen size is written on the tab line and in the kitchen — except when it's the default Regular, which stays hidden on purpose.

  7. See it the way the guest does

On the public page, an item with more than one size shows its price range next to the name, like “R$ 28,00 to R$ 62,00”, and right below, the list of sizes with each one's price and description. It's worth opening the qmen.us/your-code address on your phone after saving, to see it the way the guest does.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to set up the sizes again for each item?+

No. The size list belongs to the whole restaurant: you set up Large once and it's available for any item. On the item you just select which sizes it uses and fill in the prices.

What's the Regular size for?+

It's the default size every restaurant already has. It's for items sold in a single size: since it's the only one, we don't even ask for the size and don't write “Regular” on the tab or in the kitchen.

Can I charge different prices per flavor in each size?+

Yes, that's what the grid is for: each size and flavor combination has its own price. And a flavor with no price filled in for that size simply isn't offered there.

What happens if I delete a size?+

Deleting removes that size's prices on every item that used it, and there's no undo. If it's just a pause, it's better to uncheck Active when editing the size: it stops appearing in the sizes table of the item editor.

What if I sell by weight, not by size?+

Then it's a different case: on the item, change the Price type to Variable (by weight) and enter the price per kg, 100g or portion. An item priced by weight doesn't use the grid of sizes and flavors — it's one pricing model or the other.

Does changing a size's price affect orders already placed?+

No. The price is calculated and locked in on the tab line the moment the item is entered. Changing the grid afterward only applies to the next orders.
