How to set up an item priced by weight

Picanha by the kilo, acai, buffet, cheese by the piece: some items can only be charged after they go on the scale. qmen.us stores the rate per unit of measure and lets the waiter enter the weighed amount when taking the order.

Quick answer

Set up the item priced by weight by setting Price type to Variable (by weight), then enter the price per unit and the unit (kg, 100g, portion). On the order, the waiter taps the item, types the weighed amount, and the total comes out as rate times amount, locked in on the tab.

What an item priced by weight is

An item priced by weight is a menu item saved in Variable (by weight) mode. Instead of a fixed amount, it stores a rate per unit of measure — R$ 70,00 per kg, for example — along with the unit you choose. The Unit field is free text and comes with ready-made suggestions: unit, kg, 100g, portion and liter.

It's a price mode, not a different kind of item: name, description, photo, category and Default kitchen stay the same. What changes is the rest of the form. A variable item doesn't use the grid of sizes and flavors or option groups — the screen hides those blocks as soon as you change the price type. And it's left out of guest self-ordering, because the restaurant is the one holding the scale, not the table.

Why sell by weight instead of a fixed price

  • The price follows the scale. You set the rate once, and each order goes out with that piece's weight. Nobody needs one item per weight range or a calculator.
  • The amount is locked in on the tab. The line stores the rate and the unit as they were at the time of the order. If you change the price per kg tomorrow, today's tabs keep the amount the guest saw.
  • The kitchen sees the amount, not a count. On the display and the printed ticket the line shows as 0,48 kg Picanha, instead of 1× Picanha. Whoever is cooking knows the size of the piece right away.
  • The public menu shows the rate with its unit. On your page the item shows as R$ 70,00 / kg, and the waiter sees the same thing on their list — nobody mistakes a rate for a fixed price.
  • Left out of self-ordering, on purpose. An item priced by weight doesn't appear on the menu the guest uses to order on their own with the table QR code. The amount only exists after weighing, so entering it is always the waiter's job.

Step by step to sell an item by weight or measure

Six steps: four when setting up the item and two on the tab, when the piece goes on the scale.

  1. Open the item in the Menu

On the Dashboard, open the Menu and tap + Item to create it from scratch, or edit on an item that already exists. Fill in the name, category, description and photo as for any other item.

  2. Change the price type to Variable (by weight)

In the Price type field, change Fixed to Variable (by weight). The screen reacts right away: the sizes table, the flavors list and the option groups disappear, and a new block with two fields appears.

Tip: An item that already had sizes, flavors or option groups loses that setup when saved as variable — it's one pricing model per item, you can't combine the two.
  3. Enter the price per unit and the unit

In Price per unit, write the rate, with a comma, just like that: 69,90. In Unit, pick one of the suggestions (unit, kg, 100g, portion, liter) or write your own. The first field's label follows what you type, so you can check that it reads Price per kg.

  4. Check the Default kitchen and save

If your restaurant has more than one prep station, check the Default kitchen: that's where the line goes when the waiter enters it. With just one kitchen, the field doesn't even appear and the item already goes to it. Tap Save.

  5. Enter the amount on the order

In the waiter app, the item appears on the list with its rate and unit, like R$ 70,00 / kg. Tap it: instead of adding 1, the browser opens a small box asking Quantity in kg. Type what the scale showed — 0,48 — and confirm.

  6. Check the total and send it to the kitchen

The line goes on the tab as 0,48 kg Picanha, with the total already calculated (0,48 × R$ 70,00 = R$ 33,60). While it's still a Draft, you can write a note or tap remove. Each weighing is one line: if you weigh another piece, tap the item again. Then send it to the kitchen like any order.

Frequently asked questions

Can the guest order an item priced by weight on their own with the table QR code?+

No. An item priced by weight is left out of the self-ordering menu and the table page doesn't accept that order — the quantity only exists after weighing. The waiter enters it, in their app.

I changed the price per kg. What about the old tabs?+

They stay as they were. The line locks in the rate and the unit at the moment the waiter enters it, so changing the item's price afterward doesn't touch any tab, open or closed.

How does the waiter type the amount? Can they use a comma?+

They can use a comma or a period: 0,48 and 0.48 mean the same thing, with up to three decimal places. If they leave it blank, type letters or zero, nothing is entered and they see the warning Enter the quantity.

Does an item priced by weight appear on the public menu?+

Yes, with its rate and unit: R$ 70,00 / kg. What we don't publish is a fixed price in the data Google reads, because the real amount depends on the measure — advertising the rate as the final price would mislead people searching.

Can I charge per 100g, per portion or per liter?+

Yes. The unit is free text: 100g, portion, liter, skewer, whatever your restaurant uses. The calculation is always the same, rate times the amount entered.

I weighed it wrong. Can I fix the amount?+

As long as the line hasn't been sent, tap remove and enter it again with the right amount. Once it's sent to the kitchen it locks, and the app warns that the item was already sent.
