Tables and QR codes

How to create and name your dining room tables in qmen.us

The table is the basic unit of qmen.us: it's where the link, the QR code and the tab the guest follows on their phone all come from. Creating one takes about ten seconds, and the only detail that needs care is the code — it goes into the link and never changes.

Quick answer

Open Tables on the Dashboard, tap New table and enter the number or code; the name is optional. You can create and name tables in seconds: the code goes into the link and the QR code and never changes. Renaming only touches the name; removing deletes the table, or deactivates it if it already has orders.

What a table, its code and its name are

Creating and naming tables means registering, one by one, the spots in your dining room inside qmen.us. Each table carries two pieces of information: a code — the number or short nickname that goes into the link — and a name, which is optional. The code becomes the table's public address, like qmen.us/your-code/t/7, and it's what the table QR code carries.

The name is there so you and your team can find things fast. It shows up as the card title on the Dashboard and on the QR code sheet, so a table doesn't have to be a number: you can have Patio, Counter or Window table. Without a name, the card shows Table and the code. And if your restaurant hands out a numbered tab instead of seating guests at a table, the What to call your tables field in Settings switches the term to Tab across the whole app.

Why the code is locked and the name is free

  • The QR code stuck on the table never stops working. The code goes into the link the moment the table is created and stays locked there. You can rename the table a thousand times and the sticker still points to the right place.
  • The name is for people, the code is for the machine. Renaming is instant, happens right inside the card and breaks nothing. Call it Patio today and Table 12 tomorrow, without reprinting a single sheet.
  • A table with history doesn't disappear. If it has ever had an order, we deactivate it instead of deleting it. Past numbers still add up, and the inactive table simply stops taking new orders.
  • Your whole dining room on one screen. The top of the page shows how many tables there are, how many are in use right now, how many are free and how much is open on tabs — without you opening each table.
  • Add as many as you like. There's no table limit and no per-table fee: qmen.us is free for the restaurant with no commission per order, because we're not a marketplace.

How to create and name tables in 6 steps

Six steps, from the Dashboard to a renamed table card — plus what to do when a table leaves the dining room.

  1. Open Tables on the Dashboard

On your restaurant's Dashboard, click the Tables card. You land on a grid of cards, one per table, with a summary of the dining room right above: Total tables, In use now, Free and Open, which adds up the value of open tabs.

  2. Tap New table

The New table button sits at the top of the page, next to Print QR codes. The last square in the grid, the one with the plus sign, opens exactly the same window. It has two fields and nothing more.

  3. Choose the number or code

The Number or code field takes the table's short identifier: 7, back-2, patio-1. We tidy up whatever you type — strip accents, swap spaces for hyphens and make everything lowercase — so Patio 1 becomes patio-1 in the link. Two details: the code can't repeat within the same restaurant, and it can't be changed later, so the QR code stays stable.

Tip: Got a code wrong on a table you already created? There's no editing it: create another one with the right code, print the new QR code and remove the old one.
  4. Give it a name, if it helps

The Name (optional) field takes free text: Window table, Patio, Counter 3. That's why a table doesn't have to be a number. If you leave it blank, the card shows Table followed by the code. Click Create table and the card appears instantly, already with its QR code, public link and the Open and View QR buttons.

  5. Rename it whenever you like

At the bottom of the card, Rename turns the table's title into a text field right there. Type the new name and press Enter to save — Esc cancels. A Name saved notice appears in the corner of the screen. This only changes the name: the code, the link and the QR code stay the same, so nothing needs reprinting.

  6. Remove or deactivate the table

The Remove button, in the right corner at the bottom of the card, opens the Remove this table? confirmation. If the table never had an order, it's gone for good and its QR code stops working. If it did, we deactivate it instead of deleting it: the card gets the inactive label, it stops taking orders and drops off the QR code sheet. To bring it back, just click Reactivate on the same card.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change a table's code after creating it?+

No. The code goes into the link and the QR code the moment the table is created and stays locked there, precisely so the sticker on the table never stops working. If you need a different code, the way to go is to create a new table with the right code, print its QR code and remove the old one.

Does a table have to be a number?+

No. The code accepts letters and hyphens, like patio-1 or back-2, and the name is free text: Patio, Counter, Window table. If you leave the name blank, the card shows Table followed by the code.

What happens to old orders when I remove a table?+

Nothing is lost. A table that has had orders isn't deleted: we deactivate it, the card shows the inactive label and it stops taking new orders. Its history stays linked to it, and the Reactivate button brings the table back whenever you want.

Is there a table limit or a per-table fee?+

Neither. qmen.us is free for the restaurant with no commission per order, so add as many tables as your dining room has, including the patio, the counter and that table that only opens on weekends.

My restaurant uses tabs, not tables. Can I change the term?+

Yes. In Settings there's the What to call your tables field, with the options Table and Tab. Choose Tab and the whole app switches to saying Tab — buttons, titles and notices.

Does the guest need to install an app to scan the table QR code?+

No. qmen.us runs in the browser: the guest points their camera, opens the table link and follows their order with no sign-in and nothing to download. Payment, PIX included, is arranged directly with the restaurant — we don't process money.
