How to organize your menu by dragging in qmen.us

A good menu is a menu in the right order: what sells most goes on top, the rest follows below. In qmen.us that means holding the ⠿ handle and dragging — the new sequence is already live on your public page and on the waiter's phone.

Quick answer

Open Menu on the Dashboard: you can organize the menu by dragging the ⠿ handle. Pull a category up or down to change the order, and drag an item by its handle into another category. We save it automatically, and the public page shows the new order right away.

What dragging items and categories in the Menu means

Organizing the menu by dragging means changing the sequence directly on the Menu screen, with your finger or the mouse, without opening any form. Each category is a card with a ⠿ handle next to its name, and each item inside it has a smaller handle, before the photo. You hold the handle, drag and drop: we save it instantly, with no save button and no page reload.

Two things move around here. One is the order of the categories, which is the same one the guest sees on the public page and the one the waiter finds on their phone when looking for a dish. The other is each item's category: dragging an item decides which category it lives in, including the Uncategorized card, at the bottom of the list.

Why it's worth reordering the menu with your finger

  • The order you set is the order everyone sees. A category that moves up in your Menu also moves up on the public page and on the waiter's list. You can bring drinks or the dish of the day to the top in a few seconds, without touching prices or photos.
  • It takes fewer taps than a form. Moving an item to another category is hold and drop. You don't need to open the item, hunt for the right field and save — and nothing else about the item changes along the way.
  • It saves itself. Every drop saves the change instantly, so there's no save button to forget and no order lost because you closed the tab.
  • It runs in the browser, phones included. There's no app to install: the same screen opens on the cashier's computer and on a phone. And when your drag reaches the edge of the screen, the page scrolls on its own so you can reach the category further down.

How to organize your menu by dragging, step by step

Six steps, from the Dashboard to a final check on the public page.

  1. Open the Menu on the Dashboard

On the Dashboard, open Menu. The categories appear one below the other, each with its items, and at the top are the Import printed menu, + Category and + Item buttons. Right above the first category there's a reminder: drag categories by the handle to reorder them, and drag items between categories.

  2. Change the category order with the handle

Hold the ⠿ to the left of the category name and drag the whole card up or down. The handle is the only spot that moves it — clicking the name, edit or + Item doesn't drag anything. When you let go, the new order is saved instantly.

  3. Drag an item to another category

Each item has its own smaller ⠿ handle, before the photo. Hold it and drop the item inside another category's list. While you drag, the item gets a lightly tinted background and the mark showing where it will land is faded. A category with no items shows the prompt Drag items here. That message disappears as soon as the first item arrives.

Tip: Dragging an item up or down within the same category changes nothing: within each category, items are always listed in alphabetical order. To get a dish to the top, you have to rename it or create a category just for it.
  4. Take an item to a distant category

You don't need to drop the item halfway. When your drag gets close to the top or bottom edge, the page scrolls on its own, and the closer to the edge, the faster it moves. That way you can take an item from Starters all the way to Desserts in one go. The same goes for dragging categories.

  5. Remove an item's category

After the categories there's the Uncategorized card. Drop an item there and it loses its category — the empty card's message says exactly that. The item stays active and available to sell: on the public page it appears in a separate block and, in the waiter app, in the Other group. To put it back, just drag it into a category again.

  6. Check how it looks for the guest

Open your public page, at qmen.us with your restaurant's code, and check the sequence: it follows the order you just set. One detail that catches people off guard: a category with no active items doesn't appear for the guest, even though it exists in your menu.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to click save after dragging?+

No. Every time you drop, the change is sent right away and there's no save button on the screen. If your internet connection wobbles at that exact moment, the order might not be saved — reload the Menu page to see the sequence that's actually in effect.

Can I order the items within a category my own way?+

Not today. Within each category, items are listed in alphabetical order, and dragging an item chooses its category, not its position on the list. If the sequence really matters, split the category into smaller categories and order the cards the way you want.

What happens to an item left Uncategorized?+

It stays active and available to sell, just without a category: it appears in a separate block on the public page and in the Other group in the waiter app. It's handy for a seasonal item you haven't decided where to put yet. Drag it back into a category when you decide.

I created a category and it went to the end of the list. Is that a bug?+

It's not a bug: a new category always goes to the end of the list. Drag it by the ⠿ handle to the right place and that's it, the position is saved.

I changed the order and the public page didn't change. What happened?+

Most likely the category has no active items — in that case it doesn't appear for the guest. Check that its items are active; an inactive item is marked with the inactive tag on the Menu screen.

Does reorganizing mess up open orders or history?+

No. The order is only presentation: open tabs, what's Preparing and the history stay the same. Moving an item to another category doesn't change its price or the orders already placed either.
