How to talk to your waiters with the team radio

The team radio turns the dashboard and the waiter app into a hold-to-talk radio. Here you'll see how to turn it on, how to talk to all waiters or just one, how the waiter answers and what to do if there's no sound.

Quick answer

In Settings, in the Team radio box, switch on Turn on the team radio and tap Save. A microphone button appears in the bottom corner of the dashboard. Tap it once to turn the radio on, pick All waiters or one waiter and hold the button to talk. The waiter answers by holding the button in their app.

What the team radio is

It's a voice radio between you and your waiters, like a walkie-talkie, but on the phone. You hold the button, talk and let go; anyone with the radio on hears it right away. You talk to All waiters or to a single waiter, and the waiter answers you.

The radio comes switched off and works in the browser, with no app to install. The voice passes through qmen.us and isn't recorded anywhere: anyone who didn't have the radio on at that moment can't hear it later.

Why use it

  • No shouting across the room. You call a waiter from the counter or the kitchen without moving and without bothering the tables.
  • A message for one person. Pick the waiter and only they hear it; the others just see that the radio is busy.
  • No new device. It uses the phone the waiter already carries to place orders and the dashboard you already keep open.
  • One voice at a time. While someone talks, everyone else's button is locked, so nobody talks over anyone.
  • Nothing is stored. The audio isn't recorded, neither on qmen.us nor on the phone.

How to turn on and use the radio, step by step

There are six steps: one in Settings, three in the dashboard and two in the waiter app.

  1. Turn on the radio in Settings

In the dashboard, open your account menu and tap Settings. In the Team radio box, switch on Turn on the team radio and tap Save at the bottom of the page. From then on the microphone button appears in the dashboard and in each waiter's app.

  2. Open the radio in the dashboard

In the dashboard, tap the round microphone button in the bottom corner of the screen. The Team radio box opens. The first time, tap Tap to turn the radio on: the browser asks permission to use the microphone, and you tap allow. That tap also unlocks the sound, because the browser only plays audio after someone touches the screen.

  3. Choose who to talk to

Under Talk to, tap All waiters or a waiter's name. The list shows the active waiters on your team; anyone you add later appears when you reload the dashboard. With one waiter picked, only their devices hear the message.

  4. Hold to talk and let go to send

Hold Hold to talk, speak and let go. While you talk, the button turns red and shows On air — everyone is listening or On air — only this waiter is listening. Each message lasts up to 20 seconds; at the limit, the radio cuts off on its own and shows Time limit reached.

  5. The waiter turns on the radio in the app

In the waiter app, a round microphone button appears above the bottom bar. The first time, the waiter taps it once to turn the radio on and allows the microphone. After that, when you talk, their phone plays your voice and shows Manager is talking….

  6. The waiter answers by holding the button

To answer, the waiter holds the same button, speaks and lets go. The answer goes only to you, in the dashboard, and not to the other waiters. If their phone locks the screen mid-message, the radio closes the message on its own within two seconds.

Tip: Keep the dashboard open on a device with the volume up at the counter or in the kitchen. If the page sat idle and the browser won't play on its own, you'll see A voice message arrived. Tap the button to hear it.: one tap and the message plays.

Frequently asked questions

Can two people talk at the same time?+

No. The radio takes one voice at a time per restaurant. While someone talks, everyone else's button is locked and, if someone tries, they see Someone else is talking right now.

Is the conversation recorded?+

No. qmen.us only passes the audio on to whoever is listening at that moment and keeps nothing. Anyone who had the radio off can't hear the message later.

Does it work on iPhone?+

It works in the browser on iPhone and Android. On some iPhones the message plays right after the speaker lets go of the button, not while they're still talking. The radio needs the secure connection (https) that qmen.us already uses.

The microphone doesn't work. What do I do?+

If you see The microphone is blocked. Allow it in the browser's permissions., allow the microphone for qmen.us in the browser's permissions and reload the page. On a device without a microphone, like a TV, the radio still plays what the others say.

Does the radio get in the way of the waiter's orders?+

No. The radio uses a connection separate from orders. If a new order arrives while someone is talking, the waiter app waits for the message to end before refreshing the screen.

How do I turn the radio off?+

To stop listening on just one device, tap Turn off in the radio box. To turn it off for everyone, switch off Turn on the team radio in Settings: the button disappears and the next message no longer goes through.
